MSP Testing is over!!! Yeah!!! on to the rest of the Tests

Our next Testing is Dibels. This is a test of three timed readings to test the fluency of your child's reading. This will be at 10:10 Monday, May 16th.

MAPS testing will be: Multiple choice tests on computers in the Computer Lab.
Reading - Friday, May 27th at 9AM. This is an early release day please make sure your student comes. Morning is the best testing time for us. Thanks.
Math Wednesday, June8th at 9AM. This is the day of the Science Fair in the PM.

The multiple measures of the Combined tests MSP, MAPS, Dibels, classroom, homework, and Effort/Attendance in class and after school homework clubs and other accommodations put in place for your child will be taken into consideration. If you child does not show growth the district mailed letters telling all parents that their child may need summer school and retention if growth is not shown. These were mailed in December before the second MAPS testing. Do to the high stakes of these tests please make sure your child gets sleep and has the opportunity to get a breakfast at home or to school on time so he or she can eat at school. Thanks.

Please do not send any items that your child is not allowed to bring to school with your child. Do not send valuables or money. They do not need to have any with them. We are not responsible for your child's lost or stolen items. All medications need to be dropped off at the office by an adult and have a doctors written or faxed definition of why your child needs this medication and the correct dosage and times. Thank you. WE look forward to learning at camp. We will return around 2pm to School on Wednesday, April 13th . Please come and pick up your child and their gear. We all will be ready to go home. Thanks.

Top kids of Term Two in No Missing Work were at Tie

Term 2 Peter Cole and Trygve Gard were the top students with No Missing Work for all the weeks of the term two quarter. Two Free Movie Tickets went to each of them. Kelly Kennaugh was the runner up and she won a Gift Card to Target. Way to go students. Thanks for all your hard work and diligence. Term 1 Kelly Kennaugh won the Movie tickets. We are once again watching for No Missing work and I am placing my money where my mouth is and having kids work for rewards that are out side of this school. Keep up your grades and have no missing work. It really is doable.

Wow! Thank you for the wonderful turn out this evening. I was shocked and pleasantly surprised at the turn out. I hope you were able to find the answers that you were looking for by coming into the classroom. You are always welcome to drop in and help out. As I said, come in and do a surprise desk check anytime you wish. We are trying to apply the no loose papers in our desk. Thank you for your support. If you wish to view the power point again or wish to see it in a larger format. I have saved it as a google.doc and hope that it converted well. If not please be patient with me. I am trying to learn to use google docs, so that items can be seen from home as much as possible.

Chaperones Needed All year: Please return the lavender form that was sent home on Friday. All chaperones and volunteers need to have a current volunteer application on file with the Mount Vernon School District. If you have one that you have turned in at another school please let the office staff know so that they can forward your information and you can attend our fieldtrips.

Celebration of Hot List Kids in SFA will be Friday. Congratulations to the 17 kids in our homeroom that have moved up in SFA.

Conferences have been underway this week.

Young Author's Participants from our class were Alex, Manny, Varick and Martin. They went to Young Authors at Skagit Valley College on March 24th. Way to represent the class.

Speech SFA Classes Meeting: Friday, March 26th at AM recess Mr. G. and Ms. Vaughn need the kids in their reading groups to meet in Ms. Vaughn's room for Debate partner selection and Persuasive speaking assignments for Spring Break.

Monday April 5th New SFA Reading Groups and Teachers.
New Expectations. Remember to look for Fluency Sheets and talk to your child about their new teachers and the expectations in their classes. Is there a book needed to read at home? Are there bookreports as homework? Is your child in the groups doing the debate or public speaking? How do those teachers communicate best? (BLOGs, newsletters, phone calls or texting?)

Wed. April 7th is our last MoNA fieldtrip to the LaConner. We need to have kids that need to eat their lunch eat at the first recess.

Wed. April 14th MoNA art lesson in the classroom 1:40-2:55. I would love to have help in the classroom this day. Anyone that can drop by and help would be appreciated.

Mountain School at Fire Mountain will be Thursday and Friday, April 22-23, 2010. Thank you to all those that have volunteered to come as chaperones. I will be calling to confirm today with you. Thanks. A few of you needed to update your volunteer info. This is a newer thing that is required in the district every two to three years. Thank you for taking the time to insure that kids are safe and have a great learning experience.

MoNA Field trip, Nov. 17th, 2009 12:00-2:30. We will be needing only 4 chaperones for the field trip on Tuesday, Nov. 17th first parents to get me the message that they want to go will be the ones that go. They do not want more parents/ group, because they have found the parents talk to each other and not pay attention to the students. I am sure we do not have parents like that, but that is the MoNA rule.
Permission Slips to go to MoNA field trip will be going home today. This will include all three dates for the field trips to MoNA.
Conference best dates will be sent home today please return them ASAP. Conferences will be 20 Minutes and are limited to these three dates: 1:00, 1:20, 1:40, 2:00, 2:20, 2:40, 3:00, 3:20, 3:40, 4:00, 4:20, 4:40, 5:00... as needed. Please be on time or your conference will be canceled or severely shortened. It is really hard to fit 28 conferences into three days. Wednesday's early release is in exchange for our late nights. Thank you for your understanding. My family needs me too.

No Spelling Oct. 26-30

No Spelling Next Week (Wk 9 Oct. 26-30th) due to No Time in Class to do it.

On Monday we will be taking the Math MAPS test from 1:00 to 2:55. Last Monday the students were not given enough time to take the reading test and needed to finish the next day. I want to make sure that all students have enough time to finish their MATH MAPS test on OCT. 26th.
Tuesday, Oct. 27th is Skate Night from 6-8.
Thursday and Friday we are reciting poems that were supposed to be memorized this month.
We may read our finished "Lincoln In the Dark" Stories, too.

At Lincoln In the Dark

LA Wk 7-8"Lincoln In the Dark"

This is a creative narrative first person account of being alone in the dark at Lincoln School.

We have been having a lot of fun this week planning our Language Arts for the following two weeks. We have discovered new locations in our school that were not seen before or seen the way they will be thought of in their stories. With Clipboards in hand, we walked through the bathrooms, hallways, Auditorium, Cinderella Stairway, Cafeteria, Kitchen, Boiler Room, Staff Lounge, and the Custodian's closet on the third floor that leads to the roof.

Their job is to write themselves into a story of "At Lincoln School in the Dark".

For those worried that this is a Halloween Story on demand. This is not a Halloween Story. It can be Fantasy, Western Style, Science Fiction, Fairy Tale come to our school, or Realistic Fiction, but it must be a narrative with the author in first person. I have asked that all students use their imaginations. Please help them keep it PG.

Use of other students' names: If you have permission from the student, you may use their name. Be kind and respectful to your classmates. Make them your friends not enemies in the story. No one can kill off another person or harm them even if they say it is OK.

The story must move through at least 5 different locations in our school. Each time you go to another room you must use a new paragraph. Make sure that there are transitional phrases and sentences that tell how you are getting down the hall or stairs. (I burst through the double doors onto the dark and dreary stairway and stumbled down the flight of stairs with just the green glow of the EXIT sign for a light. My heart was pounding in my ears as I neared yet another door that was locked...)

If you are with someone else moving through the dark and you speak, make sure that you write in dialogue and each new person speaking is in a new paragraph.

Make sure that the story line is your original. Do not take a cartoon or kids show and make it into your story line. It is steeling.

This has been one of my favorite Language Arts assignments and hope to be entertained by what the students write. This assignment is to encourage and excite creative writers.

Nine of the Twenty-eight Were in Class Today

Hi. We miss you if you are not one of the nine at school today. We went to Reading, Math, Library, and Music today. We had a great game of basketball in the fitness time with 5 girls (I was one) against 5 boys. The nets on the playground are so bent I was surprised at the made shots. Girls won. In a class where usually the boys outnumber the girls, 19 to 9. It was a proud moment that will not soon be relived. The last twenty minutes of our school day, we caught up on Spelling and Cursive review on our individual practice sheets that met the needs shown on the beginning of the year quiz. Your sheet is waiting you on your desk.

Parents if you are wanting work for your invalid, the 11 of us that ended the day on Monday put together all the homework for the week and placed it on the missing student's desks. It is now moved to their mailbox at the front of the room. Feel free to stop in and pick it up as needed. Three of the missing 19 students had parents that wanted work. I understand if the illness has gripped your household and you just can't think of homework at this time. When you can, we can discuss what was missed and hopefully fill the holes in learning created by this wide spread illness.

October 5th, 2009 13 students were missing today

Yes! When we started today at 9AM our class was missing 13 of the 28 students. (Meaning 15 students were in homeroom.) By lunch we were down to 13 students in Homeroom two more went home feeling ill. We were down to 11 students at 2:30pm. This was the way it was throughout the school Mr. G started the day with 14 of his 28 missing.

My math class normally has 16 students we had 7 today.

This afternoon the students and I helped each other by sorting all the papers that were handed out in homeroom and paper clipping them together. We left their work on their desks. I had a 4 pm appointment. I hoped that if parents needed the work they would ask to be let into the classroom.

LA "Feelings About Auditions and Interviews: Final Draft.
Pick a poem that is at least 8 lines to memorize and say in front of class on Wed., Oct. 28th.

All Grades are cut off this Friday, June 5th. We are getting to the end of 5th grade.
This means that:

All grades in all subject areas are able to change until this Friday. (Redo and turn in with "Re-done" written on the top of the assignment. Please, attach the old assignment to it if you do it on a separate page.)
All students may study and retake any Spelling, Math or Science test.
All students are expected to continue to do their work that is due this week as usual on the homework calendar.
All students are able to turn in extra credit this week. Ideas for extra credit have been listed on the missing work and grade sheets each week.

If there are ASSIGNMENTS STILL MISSING on Friday, June 5th :

Students will still be required to do ALL of the assignments
Students will earn no credit for them.
They will be held out of the fun activities until they are finished. (Talent Show, Picnic Day, Egg Drop, Recesses, Field trip to Seattle Science Museum, etc.) that we have planned for the end of the year until they have accomplished these assignments.
These comments have been clearly stated the past three weeks on your child's missing work and grade sheets that have been sent home each Monday with your child. Please help them finish!

Year Books are on sale for $5 this year. The price has dropped from last year.

Also we, Mrs. Fredlund's First Graders and our class, are planning a trip to Seattle Science Center on Friday, June 12. The cost to all is $2 each. Please return the permission slips ASAP; so that they are not lost, so that we know who are going, and what groups need to be created with chaperones. If you would like to be a chaperone, please indicate it on the permission slip that was sent out last week.

Thank you for your quick return on these orders forms and permission slips. The management of money and permissions in the school system if stretched out over a long period of time is extremely tedious.

Wednesday, May 20 Morning Family Style Breakfast

Megan is the Principal for the day.

If everyone has there Soc. St. in on Wed. , we will celebrate Megan's Principal decree for an additional free recess. Homework was handed out early last week. We have three weeks left of homework everyone was given the opportunity to collect all homework early. Many did.

We, Miss Warren and Mrs. Johnston's Classes, are planning on having breakfast together at school on Wednesday. Sign ups were passed out last week and a news letter included the information as well. Thank you to all the chaperones that came on the fieldtrips. We had a great time because you were with us. I would like to give a thank you to my substitute on Friday, Mr. Tolf for walking with the class as I drove to the Little Mountain due to my sprained ankle was in an air cast. Similar to the show, when planned so well "The fieldtrip" must go on.

Thank you to my co-teachers: Gretchen Rupp and Brenda Warren, who are first year teachers at Lincoln,for putting up with my hair brain ideas of fitness and Earth Day fieldtrips and continuing on with them even thought I was in a cast.

Happy Earth Day! We walked! We Weeded! We pruned invasive species! We cleaned up Edge Water Park with help from the Mount Vernon Parks Department. Way to go 5th and 6th graders in Mrs. Rupp's, Miss Warren's, and Mrs. Johnston's Classes. The earth is a better place because of you today. (87 students & 9 adults)We cut down invasive ivy, explored the sandbar, picked up garbage, weeded flowerbeds, played sports, and had fun.

Thank you Mount Vernon's Park Department for helping us celebrate and help the Earth.

Recycled Can Art Sculpture Assignment Due Friday, May 1

Recycled Can Art Sculpture:

Design and Art Sculpture with at least one can (Cans include: soup, coffee, pop, etc.) in it.

The whole can can be the sculpture decorated or you can add other cans or items with it.

Sculpture can be designed to be useful or decorative.
Sculpture can not be a weapon or shaped into something illegal.

Safety Tips:

For Safety reasons ask for an adults help in cutting the cans.
Please make sure that the items are thoroughly washed out with soap and water.

If the sculpture is larger than what the bus driver allows, please have an adult deliver it to school and be willing to bring it home after the Art Auction.

Writing Assignment Due: Friday, May 1, 2009 along with your art piece.

Once you have created your masterpiece of decorated recycled can(s) describe your art work in writing. (Cursive or Typed)

List materials used.
Title your Art Piece

Describe your inspiration (where you got the idea).

WASL Week

No Snacks have come to school so far for WASL.

Water Bottles were bought by myself for all students (28).

Three people (Amanda, Alex, and Isabell) brought in the scientific research and evidence needed to support gum chewing during the test. If you would like to send sugar free gum for your child to chew during the test it is allowed. The researched showed evidence in many studies that there was an increase in short term and long term memory recall as well as lessening anxiety in testing situations. Gum is not mandatory. But it could help.

It is not too late to help out with snacks for the class. We have 28 students if you are able to help.

We also need chaperones for the upcoming fieldtrips.

We are looking for some help. Next Week we are taking the WASL. In the past there have been snacks donated for distribution in the classroom during break time between tests.
I am willing to buy the water bottle for all 28 students that will be refilled daily for the next day’s test. I am hoping this water bottle will be used again on the three day walking fieldtrips that will be planned for the following week April 22, 23, & 24. We will be walking to the local parks in the area. A permission slip and request for chaperones will go home with your child on Monday.
If you are planning a Costco or grocery run this weekend, please keep these items in mind for our class of 28 students.
Healthy choices that are easy to hand out and do not drip a lot are preferable:

If your child was absent last week he or she will have time to make up the missed work. Conferences/ Report Cards

Conferences are not mandatory with all students Spring Conference time. Only two days are set aside to conference with those students who need a conference. 28 conferences can not be shoved into five hours. Thank you for your understanding. If you still desire a conference and did not receive the paper work from your child, please call the school and schedule one today for Wed. or Thursday.

This week Report Cards will go home with students on Friday, March 27th if your child is not having a conference.
Early Release Days are Tuesday-Friday.

Tuesday is a planning period of two and a half hours.
Conference Days are Wednesday, March 25 and Thursday, March 26th. 1pm-3:30pm +1hour 20min. exchanged each day to make up for Friday's exchange.
Friday, March 27th dismissal at 12:55pm. Teachers may leave with students that day in exchange for Tuesday's or Wednesday's additional time for conferences after 3:30 pm.

Here math class is trying to see which person will collect the most square pieces and by moving the tiles the abount of space taken up by the fraction on the card drawn.

The fraction can be broken into smaller fractions and the sum of its parts used on the board. If the sum of it's parts are not used up then the person loses a tern.

The winner of the game is the one with the most pieces at the end of the game.

Math Students in Action

Using Place Value to find where numbers fit onto a 10,000 grid sheet.

We worked in groups of 4 students to place our five numbers each onto the grid.

Setting benchmarks on the grid helped a lot.

Talking about there being 100 squares in each line and each section of ten lines were a thousand.

The whole page was broken into 10 larger sections 10 x 1,000 is 10, 000 total.

This was a really fun, challenging, and productive activity.

Student Lead Conferences

There will be Student Lead Conferences in all 5th and 6th grade classes in our building once again this year.

Your son or daughter will be running the conference. He or she will be showing you their growth through a series of reports and graded assignments. Your child will also be sharing goals for the coming quarter and year. Many goals are reached when spoken or written and then read by those who love us. Thank you for supporting this growing experience and helping hold these great students accountable for their accomplishments.

Eroding Stream Table Experiemnts- Science with the 6th graders

We have had a lot of fun learning to observe landforms as they are eroded throughout our stream table experiments.

Mountains, valleys, canyons, deltas, and many more are found in our experiments. We can see the strength a drop of water has on a dry surface of clay and sand. Imagine what it could do in a rain storm, a monsoon, or huricane.

We also have studied the sequence of events as the landforms are created and destroyed by the force of water.

October 31 No Missing Work Celebration

Celebrating the Completion of All Assignments and for a Job Well Done:

We will be watching a movie and celebrating the end of the quarter before we take off to the Great Cascade Mountain Wilderness Mountain School.

Friday, Oct. 31 we will be in need of snacks for a celebration for those who have no missing work. This is the last ditch attempt to get students caught up before the "No Missing Work or No Mountain School" kicks in.

Please help your child keep up on his or her homework so that they can enjoy the reword of a movie and treats. The movie will be linked to our Social Studies and Science curriculum but the treats are for fun. We have a parent volunteer that will be calling you to see if you would like to send a treat to school to share with our students and Miss Warren's students.

I will be keeping the students that do not have their work finished in our room while the movie will be viewed in Miss Warren's room.

At 2:55 we will end the week and the grades will be officially cut off. This is a day in which I will be leaving with the students to celebrate life with my own children.

This has been a long year so far trying to keep all 28 children in line and doing their jobs. I have put in many 12 and 14 hour days to try and keep up. Thank you to all of you parents who have supported your child with help and guidance in their educational gains. It is worth it. They are worth it. We do have many students in our class that do not have the support. If your child is friends with any of these students, please feel free to help them with their math facts, writing, reading signatures, etc. Thank you once again.

Mountain School Groups

Raven, Black Tail Deer, and Cougar are the three groups within our class.

The groups were not easy to create. I took your child's requests into account when I created the groups. Each child was given the list (purple paper) on Monday.

Yesterday, Oct 15th we started researching our animal groups and assigning group roles in this Group Poster Project. This will be due Friday, Oct 24th. We will share the results of the team poster on Monday, Oct 27th. Group Photos will be posted to the blog as soon as they are available.

Poster Boards are at school already. We will be reusing the recycled ones from last year's science experiments and the following years Country Reports. If you have any three fold poster boards that you would like to donate to our class, we will need them in Science in the Spring. We reuse them until they fall apart to the point that creative duct taping will not revive.

Extra credit and make up work will be taken until Oct 31. I will be cutting off grades at that time.

Spelling:

Study and retake a test. This is the best way to improve you score in Spelling. It has the highest points.

Math:

Find a landform to do a mini report (Mountain in our state, River in our state, the Grand Canyon, etc.

Soc. St.:

Anything to do with the Oregon Trail or the states of Missouri, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon.
Check in with Miss Warren and the assignments that you are missing for Soc. St. in her class. The progress reports went home Wednesday, Oct. 8th.

LA /Writing:

Write a story, essay, business letter, or friendly letter to help your grade.

We had our first Book order returned last Friday. We all should be reading. There are books in the school's Library, classroom Library and the Mount Vernon Public Library. Find a Book and READ.

You now can order online from your home and still help get our class bonus points. We received about 20 free books at various reading levels for our class library thanks to all who ordered books last time. We have sent home two more Scholastic Book Orders. Two High School Helpers in our Class

We are so lucky we have two Seniors from M.V.H.S. that are coming to our classroom to help. Samantha will be coming during S.F.A. and Jake will be coming during Science. It is great to have the help. Jake was a prior students of mine and has chosen to come back and help in the classroom.

These are well organized students and are driven to do well in life. It is a pleasure working with them.

Copying Cursive From The Far Point

It is so much fun to show you our class hard at work. Here we are starting our 8 pragraph paper on "How We Feel Before, During, and After our Auditions and Interviews". This paper's Final Draft will be due Friday, Oct. 10.

Here we are copying the first "Introduction" paragraph from the far point. This is a very difficult skill for those who are not used to reading or writing in cursive. We sometimes need accommodations or helpful hints to become more successful at this skill.

Some accommodations are:

Moving closer with a clip board
Getting a photo copy when you are unable to copy fast enough.
Learning to hold two or more words or a phrase in your head while you write and then looking up again once those words are copied
Always stopping at the same point like at the end of the visual line
Saying the word(s) in your head until you get them to paper
Rereading what you write to eliminate the double starts or the missed words when your brain is working faster than your hand

All of these things are common for all students not only students with Dyslexic Tendencies.

We work through our strengths and our weaknesses. We all can improve and can learn to copy from the far point.

We are all getting better at cursive!

Thursday Night's Curriculum Night

Thank you to the six families that came to the Curriculum Night. I appreciate your support.

For the 22 families who were unable to attend, I have placed a copy of the Curriculum Night Power Point Presentation in your child's mailbox. It should clear up any questions you have about the expectations of 5th graders in our state, district, and our classroom.

Other items to watch for:

October's Homework Calendar
Math for the Month
Handouts should be in each subject area of your child's notebook. Have them work on them as needed and as they pertain to the Homework Calendar and their planner.

PLEASE, if your child has nothing written in his or her planner, have a chat. Ask the student what he or she was doing when my planner was under the document camera and their planner was supposed to be filled in ?

If there is a category in the notebook that is missing handouts under it, ask why?

This is a "SHOW ME" class. PLEASE, tell you child to show you the homework check it over, and help edit their words if they do not make sense. This is very helpful to them, so that they see the importance of rereading what they write. If it does not make sense to them-it won't make sense to others.

Monday only students who were done with their LA were able to participate in Science. Today more students were involved. Some were still working on their LA from two weeks ago. Incentive to get your homework done.

We have time in science to enjoy creating the landforms of our playground. For some of us recess on the playground at Lincoln has been the best part of our days at school for the last six to seven years. Immortalizing it in a model is great science and great fun.

Science is fun.

Models of the School Playground are being formed in Science Landforms Class with Mrs. Johnston. We are journaling the playground from memory, then trying to recreate a model of what we remember. Once that is finished we are laying a grid over the aerial view and creating a map of the model. Look at what we were able to do in an hour on Friday.
